Why use direct current for aluminum?


The problem with AC welding is that the current does not penetrate deep into the joint to produce a shallow weld. If you want to connect aluminum parts of 1/4 inch or greater thickness, the AC pass will not produce a firm weld.

In order to form a strong weld on the thick aluminum plate with alternating current, the welding must be performed step by step. You must cut the edges of the seams into a bevel, place one weld after another, and then perform one or more weld fill and cover welds to obtain a firm seam. This requires three or four passes with the welder before completing the connection.

DC welds with reverse polarity do not have this problem. With DC welding, you can complete a good deep weld at a time. This saves time and produces a stronger weld.

DC welds can also be used to fix aluminum pits and chisels. You can quickly fill the cavity by DC welding and get a firm joint to keep the filler in place. After filling the hole, polish the surface with a grinding wheel to make the part look like new. This helps repair expensive machined aluminum parts that have been slightly damaged.
